democracy activist summed to police
Male' - Two more democracy
activists Mohamed Jameel, Ma. Inguluge and Adam Naseer,
Ha. Dhidhdhoo, Jareemaage, have been sent the famous
'chit' to reported to Police HQ tonight at 9:00pm
apparently 'for a case' (Massala Akah) this time. Once
again this is believed to be in relation to their
presence in places where reformists and other activists
gather in Male'.
In fact Adam Naseer is Male' Member and MDP Leader
Ibrahim Ismail's personal driver. Mohamed Jaleel was
also taken to police with Ahmed Falah on election day.
Let us pray that Gayyoom does not kill these two healthy
men.

Maldives:
The Dark Side of Life
When the 61st session of the United Nations Commission
on Human Rights considers agenda item 19 on technical
cooperation, Maldives should be a fit case. On 7 March
2005, Strategic Communications Unit of the President’s
Office unveiled much-vaunted proposals of President
Maumoon Abdul Gayoom of Maldives for constitutional
reforms. The reform proposals are manipulative tricks to
further strengthen the powers of the President while
attempting to appease an increasingly critical
international community. President Gayoom is currently
on a visit to India to promote his proposals.

President's Promises of Democracy Met With Skepticism
The Maldives
president says his country is taking steps to become a
multi-party democracy. But human rights groups and
opponents are skeptical about promises for political
change in the tiny Indian Ocean state.
President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom says he is pursuing an
ambitious reform agenda to turn the Maldives into a
modern democracy. No political parties are allowed in
the Maldives, where President Gayoom has ruled since
1978.
The president, on a visit to New Delhi, said that a
constitutional assembly is drafting new laws on
political, media and electoral freedom.

Mr
& Mrs Shiham summoned to police for being around
Tetrapod Square last night
Male' - Mr. Ibrahim Shiham and his wife Fareesha Abdul
Samad (G. Cool Grass, Male') have been summoned to
police tonight at 8:00pm for being around Tetrapod
Square last night amongst the public who gathered there.
According to reformists, this is just another sign of
how intolerant this government is to any sort of dissent
or opposition to its brutal rule.
Arbitrary arrest and torture is the only way Gayyoom
knows how to rule and stay in power.
More
details will be published as soon as we have them.
People are usually taken to "to find out information - (mauloomaatheh
saafu kohlumah)" and next thing is you could be dead the
next day without anyone taking any responsibility.
According to friends of the couple, he is a regular
visitor to the spot on almost all nights and most of the
time he is accompanied by his wife.

Public
dissent on the rise in Maldives - Reformists gathering
once again in Tetrapod Square Male'
Male' - Reports are coming that people have begun
gathering near the 'Lonuziyaaraiykolhu' of Male' - known
popularly as Tetrapod Square - in a show of opposition
against the brutal rule of Gayyoom after more people
dying in suspicious circumstances this month.
Informant in Police Services say that the authorities
are planning to threaten some of these people and will
try their best to stop the kind of momentum of August
2004, which many believe led to the Black Friday
demonstration on 13th August 2004. The public are now
convinced that the only way to remove Gayyoom from power
is mass opposition and protesting against the regime and
this could just be the beginning of the end of Gayyoom.
The authorities obviously cannot arrest the whole public
of Male said a regular participant of these activities.
More than 200 people gathered there last night and more
are expected to go there tonight.

Another death in Male'
raises suspicion
Male' - A 25 year old man,
training for the National Security Service (NSS) at
Girifushi Island has died. The family is not allowed to
investigate the cause of death and were told by doctors
that he had drowned. Leaked information from NSS reports
that he has been shot in the head which is a possibility
as his head is bandaged heavily with blood leaks visible
according to eye witnesses. DO cannot confirm this but
the man has a severe head injury.
Family of the man Mohamed
Ahmed, 25 are devastated and helpless. The cemetery in
Male' now is all guarded by NSS preparing the man for
burial because authorities do not want even the family
to inspect his body or see anything.
Eyewitness say that he was
alive when he was brought to the hospital but died
later. Defence Minister, Chief of Staff and other tops
ranking officers were at the hospital soon after he was
brought in which raises concern that the issue was not a
simple accident.
As usual, no one is taking responsibility and no
investigation or post-mortem is required as per
Gayyoom's traditions.

No
signs of a tsunami yet but scientists say it cannot be
ruled out
As a result of the
earthquake near Bandar Aceh, Indonesia, people in the
region have been fleeing to higher grounds. Reports are
also coming that Sri Lanka has begun evacuating coastal
lines on the East. Warnings also in Thailand by the
authority.
There are some reports
from Indonesia of a dozen deaths due to the Earthquake
in Nias Island. Experts are saying that if there was a
tsunami generated at the epicentre as a result of this
quake then the waves should have hit the coastline of
Indonesia within the hour and that there is great hope
that fortunately no tsunamis were generated this time.
Sri Lankan authorities are also waiting for another hour
to give all clear with regard to the tsunami warning
they issued earlier.
News from Male' is that
people are going near the shorelines to observe the
waves, which is not a smart move and people should try
to be as far away from the costal or the barrier reefs
of Male' and similarly in the islands, it should also be
the case.
No reports of a tsunami
but experts have not yet ruled out one.

India came and rescued us from the turmoil of November 3rd

After a lengthy court battle, the judge recently ordered

EU

Why
are Maldivians so scared of Gayyoom?
The answer is
simple. Gayyoom is a murderer who has killed many
Maldivians since he took office in 1978. Gayyoom is a
heartless torturer, thousands of Maldivians will testify
to that. If anyone says anything against him or any of
his policies or his corrupt officials, then you simply
get locked up in jail for an indefinite period. You then
undergo a transformation of learning to accept the
injustices of Gayyoom for the sake of your family and
livelihood. That is the idea anyway and many have given
up their fight for democracy and freedom after such
ordeals but at the same time a handful of people have
continued with their campaign and work in spite of such
experiences.

Gayyoom,
the richest man in Asia visits India
New Delhi - Portrayed as the only Arab King in Asia,
Gayyoom was received by Minister of State for External
Affairs E Ahamed on arrival in India today. During this
six day visit, Gayyoom is scheduled to meet with Indian
President A P J Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and External
Affairs Minister K Natwar Sing as well as Maldivians in
Travananthapuram.
Gayyoom is indebted to India for saving his dictatorship
in November 1988. Since then, several leaders have come
and gone in India but Gayyoom still remains in power.
India must now wake up to the fact that Maldivians hate
this man who has embezzled almost half of the country’s
wealth for his personal pleasure and to fund his
Arab-King lifestyle. Indians think that Gayyoom is a
rich man because that is what he portrays but they
perhaps don’t know that there are thousands of
Maldivians who are destitute even today, without access
to adequate health and education and other social
services.
Sadly, whilst Gayyoom is
absent from Maldives, his dictatorship is fully guarded
by Indian battleships moored in Male' harbour. What is
wrong with India? And, isn't Maldives sovereign country?
Why are Maldivians allowing Gayyoom to compromise the
country's sovereignty?

Fathuhullaa Jameel, Abdulla Hameed and Umar Zahir are
expected to be ousted or perhaps they have decided to
call it a 'day'. We have reported last month of cabinet

Gayyoom is scheduled to go on a week long

oust him whilst he is in India. Without him, the
brutality of police will not be the same and other local
leaders might ‘just’ side with the people, after all,
they can’t all be supporting Gayyoom wholeheartedly.

Yet another arbitrary arrests and prolong detention without a trial
The popular uprising which occurred in the wake of the Tsunami in Gaafu Alif
Villingili due to the Atoll chief portraying a rosy picture to the media about
the devastation of tsunami in the island has been quite cost for some locals of
the island. The uprising was never reported on local media but on Dhivehi
Observer only.
More than a dozen peoplw are being held in Maafushi Jail from January onwards,
amongst them are Mr Khaleel, Shihab (Kanduolhi) and Muhsin (Vasmeeruvaage). Their continued
detention is totally illegal as for the fact that this was a popular show of
discontent and pinpointing some participants is undemocratic and unethical.
Furthermore, it's the Atoll Chief who should be locked for lying and trying to
cover up the truth during the time of the greatest suffering the island has seen
to date. However, as always Abdulla Hameeds lovers are far superior , they
shouldn't be disturbed and they are fully protected. They are above the law, as
Gayyoom says.
These three individuals are now in detention for more nearly 3 months now
without access to any legal assistance or lawyer. Majlis should straighten out
these illegal activities conducted by Gayoom. At a time of much hype and talk
about democratic reform and accountability, how can anyone trust this government
of Gayyoom if he continues to flout the laws at will?

To survive in the society
To live a happy life
To avoid inequality of property and income
And finally to say that "I am proud of being a
Maldivian!"

Europian
parliament delegation visit Maldives
Tonight the 8 member
delegation team arrived from Colombo and is expected to
remain in Maldives until the 29th of this month.
The main purpose of this visit is to see how far the
Gayyoom's promised reform agenda have gone at this
stage. European parliament members will be meeting some
members of the people's majlis, peoples special majlis,
members of the cabinet and some members from the public.
The government is lobbying hard to buy these members and
trying to convince the European Union that people of
Maldives are behind the corrupted government and love
the dictatorial regime of Gayyoom. Moreover
pro-government members of peoples majlis will use this
opportunity to explain the situation of Maldives and
will request the European parliament members to remove
the resolution which was passed against the dictator
last year. These corrupted members will try to show the
EU members that we Maldivians are doing fine and we
don't have any problems with Gayyoom.
Confirmed reports say that Gayyoom and his ministers
have asked Addu member Shareef to talk on behalf of Addu
people. Shareef will try to explain them the weak
economy of Maldives and will request the EU members not
to go on with the resolution. Shareef has been paid
large amount of money for this. Last night near
Aslam Campaign office shareef was boasting to his
friends by saying "we will ask the EU members to remove
the resolution so that we can have a stronger economy"
A dinner is to be held at Kurumba Maldives to welcome
the European
Parliament members tonight. Some of the key reformist
members of the parliament (Eg: Aslam and Hamza) who have
won the first place in the recent election have not been
invited for this dinner. However, Gayyooms appointees to
the parliament such as Azima shukoor and spokesman
shaheed have been invited for this dinner. Members (eg:
Addu Shareef and Shaheed Zaki) who have won the second
place at the recent election also have been invited.

Sweeping
Bid Evaluation by Foreign Experts; Can't they do the
same with Maldives Reform?
Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has ruled the Maldives for over 27
years now. However, the people of Maldives are fed up of
his extremely slow speed when it comes to his reform
agendas. But now it looks like that Maumoon has found
the right people to do the right things for him at the
recommendation of Mr Ismail Firag.

Letter
to Addu Member Shareef from a Constituent
The
purpose of my writing to you is in order to encourage
and support you to stick with the commitments and
promises you have made to the people of Maldives during
your campaign. Try to remember that you were elected for
the people and not for any other agenda and in addition
not to mislead your promises for the Adduans as their
thoughts in the people's majlis.

Shaafiu
laid to rest in his native island Meedhoo
Meedhoo - Mohamed
Shafiu whose fully decomposed body was found in the
uninhabited island Kandihere was transferred to his
native island and buried their according to the wish of
his grieving mother. Police initially refused to grant
her this last wish and wanted to bury the body there and
then.
Pictures obtained by
Dhivehi Observer show that his body has been fully
decomposed and parents identified him from the clothes
he was wearing. It also shows that he made an attempt to
make it to the show rather than being washed to the
shore. It is likely that he was tired and perhaps even
injured which could have been fateful in this sad case.
More people have now been
speaking about the matter and it now appears that he did
jump off the boat as it was passing the island Kandihere.
The captain of the boat has said that he did see the man
on board but knew that he was missing after the boat
passed this island. The family were notified but police
did not do a search for him and hence he was not found
earlier. In the sadness of loosing her son in this way,
his mother has been saying that her son could have been
found alive had the police searched for him that very
night.
No investigation was
conducted about the man who went missing whilst being in
custody. Two policemen were on board the boat, Mohamed
Imad and Mohamed Abdulla, who have never been
disciplined or questioned regarding this incident.

Kyrgyz
opposition takes control
Kyrgyzstan opposition leader
Kurmanbek Bakiev says he has been named acting
president, a day after protests toppled the central
Asian state's government.
Mr Bakiev, an economist, said he had been given the
title in addition to that of acting prime minister. A
BBC correspondent in the capital, Bishkek, says calm has
now returned after Thursday's scenes of violence. Three
people are reported to have been killed overnight, as
looting swept the city and buildings were burnt down.

New
Kyrgyz leader promises polls
Kyrgyzstan will hold fresh
elections in June, says the central Asian republic's
acting president Kurmanbek Bakiev.
The pledge came a day after opposition protesters
stormed parliament, ending the 15-year rule of Askar
Akayev. Mr Bakiev told a crowd in the capital Bishkek
that parliament had picked him as president and prime
minister. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has
criticised the "illegal" overthrow and offered asylum to
Mr Akayev, whose whereabouts remain a mystery. However,
Mr Putin said he was willing to co-operate with the new
leadership in Bishkek.
