Bushry's Shadow
Cabinet!
First of all let me introduce
myself. I’m a Maldivian who’s residing abroad at the
moment. I’m not a journalist by profession neither am I
a member of any party nor am I motivated by any of the
parties. Therefore the way I put this article might be
different from most of the articles you see on DO. Still
I believe that since “Bushry’s shadow cabinet” is open
for debate it is a social service to comment on it by
every Maldivian.

Press Release: Commonwealth Secretariat

Commonwealth Welcomes Political Space In Maldives
"I commend President Gayoom and the People's Majlis on their decision to
allow political parties in Maldives. Freedom of association is fundamental
to a democratic society. I hope this historic development will contribute
positively to the important work on a new Constitution for Maldives and I
look forward to further planned reforms. I
encourage the newly registered political parties to play an active and
responsible role in supporting and informing the Special Majlis in taking
the democratic reform process forward."

Let's
Party
Even until a few hours before the registration of MDP, many people were
skeptical that Gayyoom's government would register an opposition party. The
skeptics were saying that the government would come up with some last minute
excuse to delay the registration process indefinitely. Thank Allah the
skeptics were wrong. MDP has finally been registered and political parties
have finally become a reality in the Maldives. Indeed it's time to party.
But there are some worrying signs on the horizon.

Godliness
is measurable only in terms of service to humanity
A civil
right is an enforceable right or privilege, which if
interfered with by another gives rise to an action for
injury. Examples of civil rights are freedom of speech,
press, assembly, the right to vote, freedom from
involuntary servitude, and the right to equality in
public places. Discrimination occurs when the civil
rights of an individual are denied or interfered with
because of their membership in a particular group or
class. Statutes have been enacted to prevent
discrimination based on a person’s race, sex, religion,
age, and previous condition of servitude, physical
limitation, and national origin.

Here
comes another cabinet reshuffle
The air is thick with
gossip. There’s going to be a cabinet reshuffle by the ruling regime. It is
an open secret that Gayyoom’s brother, Abdullah Hameed, is on an extended

soon resign from his post of Atolls Minister. It is high time he did that.
The people of the atolls deserve a more capable minister.

Today, Six months after
tsunami on 26 August 2004, 33% of the cost of recovery
was received and 34% of the receipts was spent,
according to statistics obtained from the ministry of
finance, reported Haveeru. This shows that only 11.12%
of the cost was spent so far by the regime out of
contributions both from home and abroad for the tsunami
affected. How long must they wait for the urgently
required 88.88% of the cost of restoration? What would
you call this? Efficiency or sheer negligence?

Why can't Gayyoom stick to the constitution? That is a

for work after his boss phoned to find out whether the

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) becomes
the first Official Political Party in Maldives

Male' - Officials at MDP has confirmed
that the party is now officially registered in the
Maldives after much hype and complication. "Today, MDP
has become the first political party to be registered in
Maldives" said the official.
MDP first filed for registration back in
2001 but was rejected by Gayyoom however, under pressure
from both international bodies, foreign governments and
locals, he has had to compromise and project a more
democratic agenda for Maldives. Gayyoom's own party MPP
has yet to complete it's registration process. MDP
continues to get support from all corners of Maldives
and is likely to replace Gayyoom's autocratic regime
over the next few months according to political analysts
in Maldives.
"Gayyoom has lost the battle," said a
long surviving political activist who is currently in
exile.

An
alternative analysis of the Dhiraagu poster campaign and
the government's reaction to it
Claiming that 'Everyone in Maldives hates Dhiraagu
mainly because they have a monopoly over communication
in the country and can charge people as much as they
like without any regard to what people earn' is
incredibly naive at best and wilfully inflammatory at
worst. If you really mean this, than you have not
understood very much about the way communication (or
indeed any) companies work these days.

Within both local communities and governments, people

Discrimination
is not found in "ALL" the resorts in Maldives
I have a habit of
listening to the "Minivan radio", a recently launched

are indeed very interesting. However, listening to the
198th program, I felt sorry for the locals
who work in the resorts and complain about the harsh
condition they work in and especially about the
discrimination policy there. Well, the person who gave
the interview, and other Maldivians who suffer from the
same difficulties, should really browse through the few
resorts in Maldives where they really set examples to
the hospitality industry and fair management, like
Huvafenfushi Resort and Spa, where I work.

Each morning, the old man
would assemble the monkeys in his courtyard, and order
the eldest one to lead the others to the mountains to

ruthlessly flogged. All the monkeys suffered bitterly,

Shadow
Cabinet by Bushry is
well thought out
In response to Bushry
Column published on 21st June, I could not help thinking
about some of the names proposed in the list. The list
appears to be quite well thought out and balanced and I
don’t think the general public would have too many
reservations about most names included in the list
although some names such as Riluwan Shareef are alleged
to be a bit tainted by corruption. I also noticed that
Bushry has missed out on two very important portfolios -
