Gayyoom
arrested 12 reformists early this morning
Male' -
Confirmed sources say that 12 reformists were arrested
in the early hours of this morning around 2am, including
Ibrahim Shiham (M. Cool Grass), Ahmed Hameed (M.
Rabee-ee Vilaa), Mufeed Hussain (M. Hiyama) amongst
others.
These activists were arrested for their present and
participation in the gathering near the Tetrapod Square
protesting against the brutal regime of Gayyoom.
Also, they are being intimidated to ensure that these
people do not show up at Gayyoom's grand speech to mark
the National Day on Sunday morning.
Ibrahim Shiham is still in custody and others have been
released after giving them warnings not to protest
against the Dictator. Some of them were questioned for
more than 12 hours.
More people are expected
to gather tonight at the Tetrapod Square. If you want
change, be there! Please!

“It was not laws, but money that limited press freedom”
says Dr. Shaheed
Dr. Shaheed needs to get a health check-up because
lately he has been babbling nonsense in the name of the
Maldivian people aimed at saving the rule of his Master,
Gayyoom “the hypocrite of the millennium”.
The most outrageous comment he has made to date was the
one on BBC on 24th January this year, when he
said “Gayyoom is the father of reform in the Maldives.”
Perhaps he was trying too hard to prove his point and
got carried away. But, as Chief Government Spokesman he
really should not get carried away on world media when
billions are watching him.

Yameen's
Parteys disgracefully attack a Nursery School
Male'
- Ahmadhiyya school nursery is now run in the old
Thaajuddeen School building and today 10 "Parteys" (drug
addicts) sponsored by Yameen, Gayyoom's brother, broke
into the school over the wall and took hostage a teacher
of a nursery class (all pupils are all under 3 years of
age) and mugged her. This is another of Gayyoom's
brother's tactics to scare the people or perhaps the
Parteys are taking the law into their hands knowing that
they are protected by the illicit government of Gayyoom
through his brother Yameen. Eye witnesses confirm that
the little ones in the class were scared and shocked.
Parents are worried but too scared to utter a word
fearing imprisonment and torture.
Reliable sources in the Education Ministry are very
concerned over this incident and request the "Parteys"
not to repeat any such acts in the future. "It is
certain that this news will not be published in local
media so please publish this in DO so that everyone
knows about it. This is a very serious issue," says the
official from the Education Ministry. According to
school teachers Mr. Nashid (Gahaa) is trying to cover up
the whole story because Yameen is the President of the
Machchangolhi ward. This is a serious matter and we
advice Minister Shaugee and Director General Salih to
investigate and look into this matter as this is not a
matter of serious concern.

information concerning the case of Rajan, Saravanan, and Kamal, three Indian
nationals in possession of work permits, working in Male'. According to the
information received, on 8 April 2003 they were arrested and charged with the
rape and murder of a woman. It was also alleged that the three men were
subjected to physical ill-treatment in detention. Saravanan was reportedly
forced to sign a confession despite his demands for a forensic examination. It
is reported that Saravanan subsequently died in detention as a result of a
beating. The three men allegedly did not understand the local language, and the

Newest
Republic
The familiar strains of Auld Lang Syne swelled up from a
sprawling cluster of tiny coral islands in the Indian
Ocean last week, but the singers were not celebrating
the New Year; they were merely singing their own
national anthem. After years of autocratic rule under
Sultans known as the Golden Feet,* the Maldive (rhymes
with small hive) Islands had just become the world's
newest republic. Queen Elizabeth herself sent the Moslem
islanders a message from another island, wishing them
"good luck, fair winds and calm waters." A British
cruiser stood by to fire a salute, and thousands of
soft-eyed, coffee-colored Maldivians—the men in sarongs,
the women in Mother Hubbards—crowded on to the main
island of Male to join the festivities.

Didi-Dee
& Didi-Dum
Most nations take years and shed much blood running the
political gamut from monarchy to anarchy. But in the
placid, unruffled Maldive Islands, which lie some 400
miles southwest of Ceylon in the Indian Ocean, these
things are done more calmly. Last January, after
centuries of autocratic rule under a sultanate, the
Maldives became the world's youngest republic by simple
popular vote (TIME, Jan. 12). There was no trouble
whatever; the sultans had long since tired of their
confining work, and Amin Didi, the man the Maldivians
unanimously elected to serve as both President and Prime
Minister in the new republic, was next in line for
sultan anyway. Just to keep it all in the family,
Ibrahim Mohamed Didi, a cousin, was elected vice
president.

The
Essentials of Aid - An Australian doctor relates her
experience
I was visiting my parents in Bihar, India, when I heard
about the tsunami. I wanted to go to the country's
battered southern coast to help, but I couldn't get a
clear response from the local authorities. So I headed
instead to the Maldives, posted by Britain's
Commonwealth Service Abroad Programme to Buruni, an
island 24 hours by boat from the capital, Male'. Coral
reefs had protected the Maldives from the full force of
the tsunami, sparing all but 108 people. But this nation
of low-lying islands suffered terribly from the
subsequent flooding. Although no one on Buruni died from
the tsunami, and the worst damage was waterlogged
houses, conditions there were primitive, and its
isolation meant that getting prompt assistance was
impossible. I was to be the only doctor on the island,
looking after some 1,500 people.

Drug Abuse Widespread in Maldives
It is not hard to establish the correlation between drug
addiction and Gayyoom’s rule in the Maldives. His
education and vocational training policies were
inadequately funded from the very beginning which meant
that several thousands children have no or very little
education and hence are unable to get a job and fend for
themselves. So, the best thing Gayyoom could do was let
the drug use be allowed and create a huge population of
drug addicts, whose only need is drugs and will do
anything to get it. In return, this will also allow him
to mobilise these disgruntled youth to be used for his
heinous policy of creating fear and insecurity amongst
the population reinforcing the need for a ‘wild’ police
force in the Maldives.

No

Maldives Parliament
Male’ – In a report in Haveeru daily, the Speaker of the
Majlis Ahmed Zahir has said that there have been a total
of 4 urgent issues submitted by MPs, including 2 by
Male’ member Ibrahim Ismail and one by Thaa Atoll Member
Afeef.
He further clarified that all the issues have been
included in the agenda for this session of the
parliament but admitted that there were no rules of
procedure to deal with issues submitted by MPs further
reinforcing the allegation by many that the Maldives
parliament has been a rubber stamp to endorse Gayyoom’s
crimes including abrogation of the constitution for the
past 27 years. No wonder Shaheen Hameed disagreed with
Gayyoom about the freedom of voting in the parliament in
his interview to Washington Post and said “
I have seen Parliament at work from the inside,” he says.
“I would not like to go in there as a member the way it
runs. It does not work as a Parliament. It legislates,
but it legislates what the government wants it to
legislate on.”

Rise and fall of
Indonesia's strongman Suharto after 33 years in power
The dramatic resignation
of President Suharto on 21 May 1998 brought to an end
the longest period of one-man rule in modern South-East
Asian history.
His rule was founded on economic success, bolstered by a
political system which displayed some trappings of
democracy whilst ensuring that there could be no
effective opposition.
In power, President
Suharto consistently played on people's anxieties about
social unrest, separatism and religious extremism to
maintain his own grip on power and the overall
domination of Java within the Indonesian archipelago.

Abdul Gayyoom; the Hypocrite of the Millennium
Gayyoom embodies all the characteristics of a true
hypocrite. He never delivers on his promises, says one
thing and does the complete opposite. He was amongst the
few graduates in Maldives at the time and significantly
he was revered as an Islamic Scholar back in 1978. This
was enough to convince the largely uneducated public at
the time that he would be a good president.
Nevertheless, he broke the law from day one.

Abdulla
Hameed, Fathuhulla Jameel and Umar Zahir should step
down making way for new leaders
There is no doubt that these three grass root leaders of
Maldives have had a great say in the way Gayyoom runs
his government. However, it is also a fact that the
public now wants change and a more effective and able
government. These leaders have been in powerful
positions for the better or rather the whole part of
Gayyoom’s reign and is now seen by many as the old guard
who really should make way for change. It will be a
patriotic move.

Police keeping a watchful eye on the public – Tetrapod
Square assembly set to continue
Male’ – Gayyoom’s street police
is working hard to discourage people from
assembling in public places and expressing their views.
His Attorney General has issued a warning saying that
the government can and will arrest and prosecute those
who do so.
Judging by past experiences, people have
no doubt in their minds about the dire consequence of
opposing Gayyoom’s rule but at the end of the day, this
is the only peaceful means to an end to the dictatorship
of Gayyoom.
Last night the crowd at the Tetrapod Square of Male’ was
somewhat smaller than previous nights perhaps as a
result of these intimidating announcements and other
activities such as placing more street flood lights in
the area. STELCO (State Electric Co.) was hard at work
placing more lamp posts which is believed to be another
sign of intimidation. “They are now going to film the
gatherings as they always do and prosecute people using
that as evidence but all we do is just sit or stand
there and talk to each other” said Hassan, a Resident of
Male’ from Addu Atoll, who has over the last 6 months
lost all his livelihood, “thanks to Gayyoom’s new policy
of sidelining the people of Addu,” he added.
More people are expected to assemble in the Square
tonight in a show of solidarity and unity for the call
of better government and upholding the rule of law.

The sea not only erodes the coastline, but large waves

The mainstream scientific consensus on global warming is

sea levels and increase storminess, escalating the
threat of flooding and subjecting more land to

Torture
and repression exposed in holiday paradise of
Maldives
Behind its picture postcard facade, the Maldives
are being run as a "secret dictatorship" engaged
in "arbitrary arrest, detention and torture",
according to a human rights report.
The Indian Ocean archipelago, a favourite luxury
holiday destination for well-heeled Westerners,
relies on a culture of repression and fear to
prop up a brutal regime, said the report by the
Asian Centre for Human Rights, entitled
Maldives: The Dark Side of Life.

Arbitrary
Arrests and Detention Justified by Maldives Law says
Attorney General Press Statement
It has been noticed in these days that it is being
reported among the public through the media that the
obstruction of preventing the increase in criminality in
society is because the parties executing the Law are not

Democratic Party calls for President Gayoom not to use
violence against reform oriented assemblies
Members of the public have
been peacefully assembling in growing numbers for the
past three nights in Male’, Maldives. Estimates indicate
that more than one thousand persons are now attending
these assemblies.
The last peaceful assembly of this magnitude was
violently dispersed on 13 August 2004. Despite
international opprobrium at the crackdown, members of
the public, including eleven Members of Parliament, were
beaten, detained without charge or legal representation
and held for over three months in conditions Amnesty
International described as cruel, inhumane and
degrading.

Male' - More than 1600 reformists assembled near the
Tetrapod Square in Male' last night in an attempt to
show their dissatisfaction against Gayyoom. This was the
fourth night in a row and the momentum appears to be
getting stronger.
Also, last night there was no direct harassment from the
police which many saw as a positive move by the
authorities. Reformists have requested the government
not to interfere in such peaceful gathering which are
only aimed at expressing public sentiments.
More people are expected to gather tonight.

Hameed's Addu visit aims to derail the reform process
Addu - Atolls Miniters Hameed (Gayyoom's brother) has
been touring Addu over the last 3 days. According to
local sources he is said to be furious over the results
of the last elections in which government candidates
were rejected by the people of Addu. He has specifically
told island chiefs and other government officials in
Addu that he does not want Husnu Al-Suood to be elected
for the vacant seat of the Constitutional Assembly. The
bi-election has not yet been announced but it appears
that Hameed is as usual above the law.
Hameed has also suspended 3 island chiefs, including
Maradhoo Island Chiefs, Abdul Latheef Mohamed and
Abdulla Saeed as well as Hulhudhoo Junior Island Chief
Ahmed Shafeeu, this is believed to be in relation to
their failure to support government candidates in the
January parliamentary elections.
Hameed is staying in the government mansion Dhoogas in
Gan island and is always accompanied by his favourites
in the islands.
